TUE JUL 17 • Arrive in Tblisi

Arrive Tblisi international airport, transfer to the hotel via private luxury vehicle. Remainder of day at leisure. The main group will arrive late afternoon. This evening, join fellow travelers for dinner at the extraordinary Bohema restaurant that is beautifully designed and has won national architectural awards. It is also known for its eco-friendly approach using only organic fresh ingredients.

Day 3

WED JUL 18 • Mtsketa, the Ancient capital of Georgia

Mtskheta is the ancient capital of Georgia and the center of the country’s conversion to Christianity in 337 AD. An important religious center, Mtskheta is home to the monasteries of Jvari, perched on a cliff overlooking the city, and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral. Tour these sites this morning before lunch.

Drive to Gori town to visit the cave town of Uplistsikhe (Fortress of the Lord) dating from the first millennium BCE. The rock-hewn town includes houses, temples, streets, and Roman theatres which were carved out of the cliffs. Enjoy the town and then return to Tbilisi for dinner at the Funicular restaurant, which offers spectacular views of the city.

THU JUL 19 • Tblisi and the State Museum

This morning’s inspirational day will begin with a walking tour of the city. On tour, walk the old quarters of the city as well as center, with its famous sulfur springs along the Mtkvari River. Traditional houses with balconies and grape vines are the backdrop on the stroll towards Narikhala, the 4th century fort overlooking the city. Stop for a lunch on your own at a charming boutique restaurant. Then, visit the State Museum of Tbilisi to view some of the most significant archaeological finds in the country. Enjoy exclusive access to the Museums Gold Fund accompanied by the curator.

FRI JUL 20 • Caucusus Mountains

After breakfast, depart on a full-day trip to the mountainous regions of Mtiuleti and Khevi. See the high peaks, roaring rivers and mountain lifestyle of Georgia’s Northern borderlands. If weather permits, see Kazbek, meaning ice-top, the third highest and one of the best-known peaks in the Caucasus. Then, drive to Ananuri to see the 16th-17th century fortresses and churches. Visit Gerget Trinity Church – the most important altar of the 14th century, located on the slope of Mount Kazbek.

Day 6

SAT JUL 21 • Dilijan | Yerevan

Transfer this morning to the Georgian-Armenian border to begin the tour of Armenia with a visit to the medieval monasteries of Haghpat or Sanahin, World Heritage Sites. The monastic complex represents the highest flowering of Armenian religious architecture. Continue to Dilijan, a small paradise with charming nature and extraordinary architecture. Visit the preserved Sharambeyan Street, Old Town Dilijan and visit the museum which displays a typical 19th century home with all its locally made furnishings. Here, enjoy unique local interactions on the street and enjoy lunch. Afterwards, drive to visit Lake Sevan and Sevan Monastery on the peninsula. Dinner is also included today.

Day 7

SUN JUL 22 • Vagharshapat | Zvartnots | Garni

This morning drive to Vagharshapat to see the spiritual center of the Armenians and home to the Holy Armenian Apostolic Church. The focal point is the Mother Cathedral of Holy Etchmiadzin, originally known as the Holy Mother of God Church, it was first built by Saint Gregory the Illuminator as a vaulted basilica in 301-303 and is one of the oldest in the world. The church was notably enlarged in 480, 618 and 1658.

Later, continue to Zvartnots, a town with a complex of structures erected in the middle of the 7th century and of extreme architectural value. The complex consisted of the St. George temple or Zvartnots and the palace of Katholikos Nerses III. Then, drive to T, a large village in the Kotayk Province of Armenia which is known for the nearby classical temple and Geghard cave monastery.

MON JUL 23 • Yerevan

A sightseeing tour begins with a panoramic view of Yerevan with the backdrop of Mt. Ararat. Then, learn about the culture through a visit to the history museum and the Matenadaran Museum – The Institute of Ancient Manuscripts. Visit the Parajanov House museum commemorating the Soviet and Armenian film director and artist who made significant contributions to Armenian and Georgian cinema. Gather this evening for a Farewell Dinner.

International Airfare

You will need to book flights from the USA to BAKU (GYD) and return from YEREVAN (EVN). Aeroflot, Air France/Delta, Lufthansa/United, Qatar are among airlines that can be used to book airfare for this tour. We recommend booking at least 7 months in advance if you want to use Frequent Flyer Miles or the American Express Platinum card 2-4-1 program.

Travel Documents

A valid passport is required for international travel and must be valid for 6 months after the return date. No visa is required for USA and Canada passport holders for Georgia or Armenia. A visa is required for Azerbaijan. An E-visa is obtainable at https://evisa.gov.az/en

Health

No immunizations are required for travel on this tour. However, the Center for Disease Control suggests that all travelers make sure they are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.

The CDC also suggests that most travelers get a vaccine for hepatitis A because it can be contracted through contaminated food or water in all three destination countries, regardless of where you are eating or staying.

Upon arrival at Baku international airport, transfer to the hotel via private luxury vehicle. Baku, the Azeri capital, is a fascinating city, where East and West blend seamlessly. The Old City or Icheri Sheher, enclosed within the fortress walls, and the famous Maiden Tower are among the modern hallmarks of Baku. One can distinguish the magnificent Flame Towers and the sports and leisure complex of Crystal Hall. There is plenty to see and experience in this intriguing city.

Day 3

SAT JUL 14 • Baku | Absheron and the Carpet Market

Today, explore the sites of this captivating city. Start with a visit to Martyr’s Alley, once known as Kirov Park, a cemetery and memorial to those killed by the Soviet Army during Black January and later to those killed in the Nagorno-Karabakh War. The park offers superb views over the bay of Baku and is a great place from which to get an idea of the layout of the city.

Continue to the old city where the walking tour includes a visit to the medieval walled city now crowded with cafés and carpet shops. Also visit the palace of the Shirvanshahs, the 12th century Maiden’s Tower, and the newly built Carpet museum in the shape of a roll. Lunch is at Gunaydin Restaurant before visiting the Baku Fire Temple, known locally as the Atashgah, and now a museum. Dinner is at Sumakh restaurant featuring colorful ethnic Azeri food.

Day 4

SUN JUL 15 • Gobustan and the Heydar Aliyev Centre

This morning, drive to Gobustan, where the rocks encompass over 60,000 mountain carvings. The oldest carvings can be dated to 14 millennia BCE and serve as a visual timeline depicting armed hunters with dogs, and life-size bulls which are now extinct; proving that civilization in Azerbaijan has existed for at least 126,000 years. On the way back to Baku, stop to see the 2,000-year-old Latin graffiti of Caesar’s troops.

Next, see the collection of mud volcanoes near Baku, whose mud in the ancient times was used for cosmetic and health reasons. With our guide, get up close to take a look. Lunch is at Panorama Villa Lux Restaurant – with delicious Caspian fish menu. Later, continue to the Heydar Aliyev Cultural Center noted for its distinctive architecture and flowing, curved style that eschews sharp angles.

MON JUL 16 • Shemakha | Sheki

Today take a scenic drive across the Azerbaijan landscape to the border town of Sheki. On the way, stopping in Shemakha, a small town rich in heritage and political and commercial history; it is famous for its traditional dancers, the Shamakhi, and Soumak rugs. Visit the Juma Mosque and, later, see the Yeddi Gumbez or Seven Tombs. Lunch is at one of the local restaurants in Gabala before continuing to Sheki. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

Day 6

TUE JUL 17 • Sheki | Tblisi

Sheki is one of the most ancient settlements and cultural centers of Azerbaijan. It was founded more than 2,700 years ago but been devastated numerous times, so most of the historic and architectural monuments currently preserved date from the 18th-19th centuries. Sheki is famous for the Royal Summer Palace of Sheki Khans with magnificent frescos and exquisite stained-glass work. It was constructed in 1762 without a single nail and is one of the most marvelous monuments of its epoch. Visit Yukhari Caravanserai and Sheki’s History Museum, with artifacts from several periods, but notorious for pieces relating to silk manufacturing and trade. Stop for lunch en route.

Travel overland to Georgia through spectacular scenery and walk to the Georgian side of the border in Lagodekhi. In the Signaghi region, enjoy an authentic Georgian lunch and a gain real insight into traditional Georgian bread baking as well as the Georgian delicacy – Churchkhela – a tasty blend of walnuts and grape juice. Continue to Tbilisi to the hotel. Dinner is included tonight.
