Join us in Mongolia, mesmerizing country that offers an unparalleled adventure into a land of vast steppes, dramatic landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. We begin in Ulaanbaatar, the bustling capital, exploring the dynamic cityscape, which combines modernity with traditional Mongolian culture.
We then fly west to Bayan-Ölgii, a province (aimag) in Mongolia, located in the westernmost part of the country. It is notable for having a majority population of ethnic Kazakhs. Here we attend The Golden Eagle Festival, held annually. It celebrates the ancient Kazakh tradition of eagle hunting, where skilled hunters demonstrate their prowess with trained golden eagles. The event features various competitions, including eagle hunting, horse racing, and traditional archery, providing a vivid showcase of Kazakh culture and heritage.
The journey continues into the vast expanses of the Gobi Desert, home to the stunning sand dunes of Moltsog Els. Here, we will enjoy the stark beauty of the desert. Moltsog Els features expansive sand dunes that can reach impressive heights. The golden sands create stunning, ever-changing patterns shaped by the wind, offering a quintessential desert landscape.
The Gobi Desert is home to nomadic herders. A visit to a local nomadic family offers a deep dive into Mongolia’s traditional way of life, providing a firsthand experience of their hospitality and customs. Our accommodations will be in a luxury Ger (yurt)!

Then our afternoon tour will include Ulgii’s History Museum, showcasing horse and eagle hunting accessories, hand-woven carpets, and other arts and crafts. After breakfast, our guide will accompany us on our flight to the Gobi Desert, where we’ll board our luxury motorcoach. To many of us, the word desert suggests a vast “sameness”, but the Gobi is a fascinating and diverse region: home to Bactrian camels, Argali mountain sheep, goitered gazelle, golden eagles, saker falcons, jerboas (similar to kangaroo rats), and many endemic reptiles. Some of the Northern Hemisphere’s most rare and elusive mammals, such as the dhole, snow leopard, and Gobi bear, also reside here.
On to the Yol Valley National Park. Though still in the Gobi and the foothills of the Altai Mountains, this surprisingly green valley has remnant streams that create ice formations at their base that may persist as late as July. Next, drive to the award-winning Three Camel Lodge.

HEALTH
With few exceptions, Mongolian hospitals do not meet Western standards. Although most doctors and emergency responders are dedicated professionals, their training and equipment are sub-standard. Most modern medical facilities are in Ulaanbaatar, though some public and private hospitals in larger provincial cities offer medical services on par with those in the capital. Medical services may be completely unavailable in remote areas. Mongolia does not have helicopter medical evacuation and those who require medical assistance in remote areas must drive to the nearest major town. Medical evacuation to Ulaanbaatar is conducted by commercial air carriers. Some pharmacies in Ulaanbaatar carry European or U.S. pharmaceuticals, but quantity and variety is limited. Most pharmaceuticals are made in China or Russia, and lack English labels.
Medical Insurance:Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. We highly recommend Trip Cancellation & Interruption insurance. Please ask Coda Tours for a quote.
Water Quality:The quality of drinking water varies throughout Mongolia, and it is likely not up to U.S. standards for potability. Most Mongolians do not drink tap water and instead prefer to consume bottled water for their domestic use.
Coda trips are casual at all times. There is no need for a jacket or tie. Pack for a variety of weather. Bring a warm jacket (down or fleece) and sweaters. Jeans, khakis and shorts (when the weather allows for them), hats, scarves and even gloves. Comfortable shoes are a must. All hotels offer laundry service, but it can be expensive.
