You haven’t lived until you’ve experienced Reykjavík on New Year’s Eve. Pretty much everyone in the city takes a box of fireworks outside just before midnight to blow up the old year then party until dawn. There is nothing quite like it. There really isn’t. New Year’s in Iceland is the new ‘hot’ destination.

Coda Tours & Pink Iceland, Icelandic LGBT travel and event specialist, have created a six-night trip for a New Year’s celebration in Iceland. The trip combines 2 nights in the countryside where we will search for the Northern Lights and explore the beauty of the South Shore with some fun and exciting activities, like an ATV ride or snowmobile excursion. For those not wanting to participate in these activities, we will have time with our guide enjoying private touring from the bus.

Then we return to Reykjavik and visit some of Iceland’s most famous natural wonders, like the Geysir geothermal area, Gullfoss, Thingvellir National Park and the famous Blue Lagoon.

We celebrate New Year’s in Iceland the Icelandic way with a bubbly bonfire tour, a house party and some late-night dancing followed by a relaxing dip in the Blue lagoon on the first day of the New Year.

But the centerpiece of our trip will be the Northern Lights Hunt. Although we cannot guarantee nature will cooperate, we have allotted four outings to increase our chances!

This is a special trip and a very special way to celebrate the New Year! Make bringing in 2019 a fabulous memory!

Day 1

WED DEC 26, 2018 • Depart USA

Depart the USA on any regularly scheduled flight to Reykjavik, Iceland. Icelandic Air & WOW air offer service from a variety of gateways in the USA.

Day 2

THU DEC 27 • Reykjavik | South Iceland

Early morning arrival from the USA. You will be met at the airport by the Coda representative. We begin with a “Welcome Bubbly by Bubbly Hot Springs.”

As we travel to the countryside, we will follow a scenic drive passing tiny villages on the coast, stopping at a couple of photogenic spots on the way.

Check in early afternoon at our hotel. This afternoon is reserved for spa time or time to just relax & recharge. Dinner is at the hotel this evening.

Our first outing in search of the Northern Lights will be tonight. Mother Nature is in charge, so we have scheduled four chances to catch our glimpse of this amazing natural spectacle. Of course, weather and conditions will determine our success.

Day 3

FRI DEC 28 • South Iceland

After breakfast, tour the South Shore, one of the country’s most scenic regions. Among the stops we make are the gorgeous Seljalandsfoss and Skόgafoss waterfalls. Seljalandsfoss is part of the Seljandsá river, which has its origins in Eyjafjallajökull glacier. What makes Seljalandsfoss so famous and interesting is that you can walk behind it. Skógafoss, another famous Icelandic waterfall, is the starting point of the Fimmvörðuháls walk over to Þórsmörk. The waterfall was also used in the films Thor: The Dark World and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty.

We will also stop at Reynisfjara black sand beach, with the Reynisdrangar rock formations and columnar basalt. It is one of the most spectacular beaches in Iceland.

There will be an opportunity to enjoy an ATV ride on the black beach or a snowmobile ride on the glacier or touring with our expert guide. There will be something for everyone!

Dinner tonight is at a local restaurant.

Our second chance for the Northern Lights Hunt will be this evening.

See the venues frequented by LGBTQ people and learn about the general history and outlook of the people who built Reykjavík and those who inhabit it today.

Day 5

SUN DEC 30 • Reykjavik

Today we also join some other LGBTQ travelers for a full day “Golden Circle Tour.”

The Golden Circle Tour allows us to visit some of Iceland‘s most stunning sights: Geysir geothermal area, the waterfall Gullfoss, and the UNESCO site Þingvellir National.

Geysir geothermal area is in South Iceland, near Laugarvatn Lake. The area is named after the biggest, and now mostly dormant, geyser Geysir and all geysers in the world owe their name to it. The biggest attraction today is the active Strokkur, which shoots up a column of water up to 30 metres (98 ft.) into the air every few minutes.

The UNESCO site Thingvellir National Park is geologically and historically significant. Apart from being the location of the oldest parliament in the world, Alþingi, it is also a place where you can see the Mid-Atlantic ridge above ground. The Eurasian and North-American tectonic plates pull the country apart by a couple of centimeters per year. Lunch is included.

Our fourth chance for the Northern Lights Hunt will be this evening.

Weather & Packing

The temperatures in December/January average between low 30’s in the day to low 20’s in the night. The “midnight sun” averages 4-5 hours per day. But Iceland’s inexpensive geothermal energy means that streets and buildings are well-lit during winter darkness.

You will need a thermal jacket, long underwear, warm hat, gloves, scarf and other clothing suitable for winter weather. The tour is casual at all times and for New Year’s Eve, a festive, warm outfit will be appropriate.

All departures are guaranteed on a minimum number of participants. A Coda Tour Manager will accompany a tour also based on a minimum number of participants. This tour can be operated as a Private Tour, can be customized and repriced based on a final itinerary.

Pre-Departure Information

A complete portfolio of pre-departure information will be mailed to you approximately three weeks prior to departure.
