The Sofitel Legend Metropole is the Grande Dame Hotel of Vietnam and one of the best famous and historic hotels of Asia. Its rich history, colonial and neo-classical architecture is an ideal place to begin an exploration of Indochina. This evening is at leisure; spend some time familiarizing yourself with your new surroundings.

MON FEB 18 • Highlights of Hanoi

This morning includes a private tour of the Museum of Ethnology, followed by a tour of Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum, House on Stilts, and the famous One Pillar Pagoda. French architecture is a feature of Hanoi, and the nearby former Governor’s Residence is a fine example. Lunch will be at Seasons of Hanoi, and the afternoon will feature a tour of Hanoi’s Ancient Quarter, including a cyclo ride and walking tour. A traditional Vietnamese menu will be served for dinner at Wild Rice.

After breakfast, depart Hanoi to Ha Long Bay – Vietnam’s premier travel destination and a World Natural Heritage site. With its picturesque blend of land and sea, this is one of the world’s most precious natural attractions. Journey across Ha Long Bay at noon on Tuần Châu Island. Lunch is served on board. Sightseeing will include Cua Van floating Village, Tien Ong Cave, Trong Cave, Ho dong Tien, Luon Cave, Ti Top Island, and Coconut Tree Island.

WED FEB 20 • Ha Long Bay | Hanoi | Da Nang

day6Wake up early to enjoy the beautiful, tranquil scenery. Perhaps start the day with some Tai Chi led by a staff member on deck. Late morning, transfer back to Hanoi. Stop for lunch at Hong Ngoc Centre, run by and for handicapped children, then continue to the Hanoi airport for a flight to Da Nang. Upon arrival in Da Nang, transfer to the hotel for check-in. The Nam Hai Hoi An Resort is located on the renowned China Beach, the imperial influence is evident in its opulent, yet Zen-like, ocean view villas.

Day 6

THU FEB 21 • Da Nang | Ancient Hoi An

The day starts with a visit to the Cham Museum in Da Nang – once the centre of the ancient Cham civilization. Then, visit Ancient Hoi An to see one of Vietnam’s oldest and best-preserved fishing villages. Visit the colorful, riverside market or visit a Silk Artisan’s workshop and learn the techniques of lantern making. Stop for lunch before returning to the hotel for an afternoon is at leisure to enjoy the amenities of the resort.

FRI FEB 22 • Hue: Vietnam’s Ancient Capital

day8Depart to Hue via Cloudy Pass and check-in to the hotel La Residence, an enchanting Art Deco boutique on the banks of the fabled Perfume River. At Le Spa, indulge in the large freeform saltwater swimming pool and a traditional Vietnamese luxurious treatment. In the afternoon visit the Imperial Citadel built in the style of the great French military architect, Vauban. Afterwards, visit the local market, Dong Ba. In the evening, a special Imperial Dinner awaits everyone at the hotel. The menu replicates that of the old Imperial Court and Imperial costumes are available for photo ops!

day9The morning includes a visit to the Thien Mu Pagoda and Minh Mang Tomb, the most majestic of the Royal Tombs. These, along with seven other tombs, are monuments to nine of the thirteen rulers of the Nguyen Dynasty. Transfer to the airport in the late afternoon for a flight to Ho Chi Minh City. On arrival, check-in to the centrally located Park Hyatt Hotel.

TUE FEB 26 • Siem Reap: Angkor Wat

day12This morning visit to Angkor Wat, the largest temple in the world and a magical place. The temple has a volume of stone equaling that of the Cheops pyramid in Egypt. It is unlike all the other Khmer temples in that it faces west, and is inspired by 12th century Hinduism. Conceived by Suryavarman II, the temple has been occupied continuously since its foundation. Return to the hotel afternoon at leisure or optional tours.

    Cathay Pacific, United Airlines, Thai Airways, Korean Airlines, Japan Airlines, and China Airlines are among airlines that can be used to book airfare for this tour. We recommend booking at least 7 months in advance if you want to use Frequent Flyer Miles or the American Express Platinum card 2-4-1 program.

    Travel Documents

    A valid passport is required for international travel and must be valid for 6 months after the return date of travel.

    A single-entry visa is required to enter Vietnam and Cambodia (and Laos for the post-tour extension) for American and Canadian passport holders. For current costs and to download forms, we recommend using Visa Central. To speak directly to Visa Central, call 877-535-0688. Please note that visas cannot be processed more than 90 days prior to departure and processing may take several weeks to complete. A Cambodian visa can also be purchased online at https://www.evisa.gov.kh.

    Visas may be obtained upon arrival at the airport in Hanoi, Vietnam and Siem Reap, Cambodia. To arrange for this, Coda Tours must submit all personal data in advance to the authorities. Please inform us at the time of booking if you wish to obtain your visa upon arrival.

    Health

    No immunizations are required for travel on this tour. However, the Center for Disease Control suggests that all travelers make sure they are up-to-date on routine vaccines before every trip. These vaccines include measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis vaccine, varicella (chickenpox) vaccine, polio vaccine, and your yearly flu shot.

    Zika virus is a risk on this tour. All travelers should strictly follow steps to prevent mosquito bites and sexual exposure to Zika virus during and after the trip.

    Minimums

    All departures are guaranteed on a minimum number of participants. A Coda Tour Manager will accompany a tour also based on a minimum number of participants. This tour can be operated as a Private Tour, can be customized and repriced based on a final itinerary. Rates are based on a minimum participation of 10. For fewer than 10 participants, rates may be revised.

Transfer to the airport for a flight to Luang Prabang, Laos. Hôtel Sofitel Luang Prabang is surrounded by thickly forested mountains and situated at the confluence of the Khan and Mekong Rivers. Luang Prabang has a tranquil, old world charm rarely found in Asia today. The legacy of the European presence here – well preserved French architecture and careful street planning – has blended delightfully with more than 30 gilded Buddhist temples to create a town rich in atmosphere and history.

Day 14

THU FEB 28 • Luang Prabang Highlights Tour

14There is an opportunity to start the day early with one of the most memorable sights of Luang Prabang –Tak Bat. At dawn hundreds of saffron robed monks move silently through the streets to collect alms. Your guide will explain this ritual which is still very much a part of everyday life in Laos. Take a stroll with your local guide through the colorful, open-air fresh market. Taste an authentic Lao Coffee at Pasaneyom Coffee Shop. It’s early but well worth the wake up call!

After breakfast, visit Luang Prabang’s National Museum, formerly the Royal Palace. Explore the Buddhist Temple of Wat Xieng Thong – often said to be Luang Prabang’s most beautiful. Visit Vat Siphouthabat, a monk school, where you will have the opportunity to meet young monks learning about Buddhism and Laos.

If time and energy permit, climb the 350 steps of Phou Sii Hill, centered in this small city, to enjoy commanding views for many miles in each direction.

Day 15

FRI MAR 1 • Elephant Camp | Mekong River Cruise

15This morning includes a scenic one hour elephant ride on the Howdah (Elephant seat) at Elephant Camp, located in the countryside near the Mekong River. Afterwards, visit Ban Thin Hong Traditional Handicraft Village to experience a special, traditional Laotian Baci ceremony to welcome, bring good luck and ward off bad spirits. Baci plays an important role in the life of the local people.

Later, begin a relaxing riverboat trip on the mighty Mekong River to visit Pak Ou Buddha Caves. These caves have been home to many thousands of Buddha images that have been placed here by local people since the 16th century. Enjoy lunch with a cold Lao beer or chilled white wine as the cruise makes its way to Luang Prabang.
